Sydney Olympic Park Duathlon 2018 – Race Report

This was now my second duathlon, lessons I had learnt and improvements I had made. I needed to realise that it was my race not a social event, I can be social before and after but I needed to focus for the duration!

I wanted to improve no doubt on my first overall time, the weather was miserable for ‘Sunny Sydney’. Driving to the event with the car’s wipers on, I had to conclude that it would keep me cool and it is what it is!

Luckily by the time we were getting ready to race the rain had stopped, even though the forecast was miserable for the whole day.

The race got underway and I was feeling good, I moved my way through the pack to a pace I was comfortable but still challenging myself. I was equipped this time with gels and nutrition for the course and a plan of how I was going to best compete.

First run was good pace, remembering this was a new course for me. So once I got into a good rhythm I was making ground, felt like my T1 went well and into the bike leg being cautious because the course was wet.

I was tracking my progress with my phone (I hadn’t gotten my Garmin watch by this event), the bike was what the officials called a ‘technically challenging’ course. It was a plus sign so 4 u-turns, I lost track of how many laps I had done and was worried I would either do an extra lap or one short!!

I did the correct number of laps and moved into T2 back into a run which I had been practicing my brick sessions and handled the transition better this time.
